Yosemite, California

My apologies for no Saturday post! I was planning on taking a whole bunch of great photos while in San Francisco but it’s tough to find the time while walking through scores of moving people, waiting for trolleys, and the never-ending search for more good food.

Yesterday, we went to Yosemite National Park, and let me tell you, I am not a fan of national parks; they’re way too boring for me. Despite my contempt for driving 4 hours for just a view, I actually enjoyed the stroll we took to see the waterfall through a shady redwood grove.

Fall Footwear

Ahh fall – we can finally break out our boots from their dusty hibernation in the back of our closet, sport our leopard printed flats, and put some more wear on our loafers. There are many classic fall footwear options, but it’s also fun to experiment with the season’s trends!

The Classics

• leather loafers

• duck boots

• smoking slippers

• leopard print

• riding boots

• rain wellies (dependent on weather)

The Trends

• lace up flats (huge trend at the moment)

• booties (these might become a classic here soon)

• over the knee boots

• statement sneaker (love slip-on sneakers also!)

• fringe/tassels

• “mod” booties (no heel, pointed toe)

Style Inspiration • Sarah Vickers

We all know it, Sarah Vickers has an amazing sense of style! She can pull off anything, and I really appreciate how classic she dresses. With fall upon us, we can all learn a thing or two from her autumn wardrobe (arguably the best season for her style).

Here’s a look at a few great snaps from her blog and instagram.

I love the plethora of  stripes, pearls, cardigans, pointed toes, and tartan I can find on her blog, Classy Girls Wear Pearls. For me, I would definitely consider her a  fashion icon!

Canadian Tuxedo

I’ve never really played around with denim on denim too much, but I’ve always loved the way it looks if done right (check out J.Crew for inspiration on the Canadian tuxedo). Having paired my light denim jacket with dark wash jeans, a safe bet, I went more a more risky combination with two very similar washes. I’d say it turned out pretty well and I can’t wait to experiment some more!

Style Spotlight • Autumnal Socks

Autumnal socks are the accessories of the  fall season as they compliment riding boots, leggings, jeans, bean boots, and rain boots. It’s always nice to keep your sock selection interesting with a variety of prints, knits, and lengths.

Here are some of my favorite socks/wish-listed socks.

J.Crew Camp Socks

J.Crew camp socks are a classic. They will look good with anything and they are nice and thick for cold weather. They are my absolute favorite pair of socks! Try out J.Crew Factory for a cheaper camp sock.

J.Crew Marled Socks

These socks would be perfect with low top sneakers to add a little detail to any outfit.

Madewell Varsity Striped Trouser Socks

Having just bought these from Madewell, they’ve quickly become a favorite. The length is just right for high top sneakers, but could probably stretch enough for bean boots. The varsity stripe is awesome too!

Madewell Printmix Trouser Socks

Fun socks for a fun person – mixed patterns is the way to go!

Forever 21 Varsity Striped Over-the-Knee Socks00142547-02

I just placed a sock order at Forever 21 a few days ago, and I think they just added these and I’m so bummed I missed them!

Forever 21 Marled Over-the-Knee Socks

I might just have to place another order, because I missed these too :-/

Forever 21 Crotchet Trimmed Crew Socks00140750-02

Crotchet trimmed socks looks so good with high top sneakers with are what I use as kind of my lazy day shoes in the fall.

I love finding printed socks also! J.Crew, Old Navy, and Forever 21 are ideal for those, while stores like LL Bean, Madewell, and J.Crew are great for finding thick woven (sometimes wool) socks.

Why You Should be Using Coconut Oil

My apologies for getting this post up on Monday as opposed to Saturday. I had it all ready to go but forgot to push “publish” I suppose, and just now noticed! Anyways, onto the post:

Coconut oil is a relatively unknown oil, yet it contains so many wonderful properties that everyone ought to know about. My family and myself are all avid users of coconut oil and we have all really seen a huge difference in using it for its many purposes. Some of the best uses I’ve come across are below:

Makeup Remover

The oil alone works great on a cotton pad to remove that tough waterproof mascara. It is also handy to slather all over your made up face (dry) and then wash off with a cleanser.

Teeth Whitening

Perhaps the most peculiar way to use it is to “oil pull”. All you have to do is get a spoonful of coconut oil (some may prefer to melt it first) and swish in your mouth for 5-10 minutes. Don’t swallow the oil when you’re done, reason being that the oil is now chock full of toxins that it removed from your mouth. Also, don’t spit it into the sink because that could clog the drain once it solidifies; instead, spit it into a plastic bag, a lined trash can, or somewhere outside. Then, swish some water around in your mouth and spit it out. After that, drink a full glass of water to further flush out your mouth. This is an informative article of why you should oil pull, but I can say that I definitely recommend it, as it whitens your teeth, removes the multitudes of toxins in your mouth, and leaves you with that after dentist appointment clean feeling.

For a healthy alternative to butter when cooking, put a pat of coconut oil in the pan next time. Not only is it healthier, but if you get virgin coconut oil, it adds a little flavor to your dish. I love taking a large handful of snap peas and tossing them in a heavily coconut oiled pan with pepper flakes, lemon juice, and fresh chopped mint!

Deep Conditioner

Coconut oil works wonders for hair! It is really nice to put a liberal amount in your hair on the weekend (you do not want to be going out in public like that) and leave it in for an hour or longer. When you rinse it off, make sure you shampoo well because occasionally you hair still may look greasy even after a shower.

Moisturizer and Lip Balm

The oil as is makes a full body moisturizer, and gives that sun-kissed, smooth look to your legs. Also, if you’re ever out of chapstick, give coconut oil a shot! Heres a nice recipe for gifts or party favors of some sort.

Hair Growth

In addition to a deep conditioner, the oil really helps lengthen your hair. Just cut your hair too short for your liking? Coconut oil!

Shaving legs with coconut oil works so well and leaves your legs moisturized (so skip the lotion) and soft! Be careful though because if a jar of coconut oil is contaminated with water, it will turn rancid, so only bring a small dish in the shower with you.

Eyelash Serum

For the longest time, my eyelash on one eye were significantly longer than the other. I started to rub some coconut oil on one eye before bed, and within a month or so, the were equal length. As with eyelashes, coconut oil can be used to grow out eyebrows. Maybe you accidentally over plucked them or want a thicker, more bold brow…coconut oil can solve that!

Other Health Benefits

Coconut oil can improve brain function, lower cholesterol, etc. Read this article for a more in-depth look at health and coconut oil.

I hope this provided some of you with a great new insight into the uses for coconut oil!

Autumn on the Horizon

It’s finally starting to cool down around here which has me “dreaming of an eternal October”. It was actually quite chilly the day I took these pictures but it warmed up quite a bit today, so maybe that was just a weather teaser:(

I did a little damage at Forever 21 this past weekend and found this wonderful skirt that I love! Burnt orange and corduroy- perfect for autumn. If I do some more shopping and start to check items of my fall wishlist, I might do a fall haul.
